Why do you do this? Because it’s easier to take sides in a simple scenario; the “Syrian People” are being “oppressed” by the “Evil Dictator, Assad.” It’s the same old excuse to overthrow legitimate authority throughout history. What is legitimate authority? That which keeps the peace. But see, in the Western Scheme of Things, “keeping the peace”is somehow incompatible with killing people who threaten social order. You rant about “human rights” when you keep changing their meanings in the West. Fifty years ago, it was unconscionable to abort children, and now people say “It’s a human right!”- The fact is, Assad and Saddam, Ghaddafi, and all these nasty people- regardless of how nasty and tyrannical they are, were the only people to suppress elements of disorder; even in oppressed countries, there is an order if not built by law then built by human relations.

You just don’t get it. You, who had the luxury to go to some university and have high-minded ideas about how the world should be because of other people with enough time and money to have opinions- you just don’t understand the social and political circumstances of people who have formed their culture with the given that there will always be an oppressor, a tyrant, a king, a sultan, etc. You look at the picture and say “But why don’t they rise up and revolt?” Because they had stability. They were able to raise their children no matter how hard it was. Now, we try to talk about “Bringing down Assad” you open up a whole can of worms, worms that don’t share your assumptions about how the world should be. You end up with children being beheaded and crucified.
