The messaging echoed what producers, labels and the media (radio) saw as capable of making money. Hedonism & hard cash played their role. Musicians’ creativity and dissent isn’t even half the story. I lived that period and saw it up close. My closest buddy and musical partner, bassist John Kahn, moved from classical & jazz to rock to become Jerry Garcia’s associate in music… and fatal overdose.
